Yakima, Washington/USA North Yakima A river and a city founded in 1883 and named after the Yakima tribe whose name is said to mean either ‘Black Bear’ or ‘Runaway’, apparently with reference to the flow of the river. However, ‘Runaway’ has also been taken to mean ‘those that run away’. The ‘North’ was dropped in 1918.
