Whangarei, North Island/New Zealand Said to mean ‘Swampy Harbour’ from the Maori whanga ‘harbour’ and rei ‘swamp’. It has also been suggested that it means ‘Rei waiting’ from whanga ‘waiting’ with Rei being an abbreviation of a girl's name, Reipae; this is where she waited for a prospective husband.
