Wharton, Edith Newbold (1862–1937) US novelist. She is best known for Ethan Frome (1911), a grim portrait of New England farm life, and her polished anatomies of New York society, The House of Mirth (1905) and The Age of Innocence (1920), for which she became the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize.
