Wanganui

Wanganui, North Island/New Zealand Petre A river, properly Whanganui, and a town founded in 1841 as Petre after William Petre (1793–1850), 11th Baron Petre, a director of the New Zealand Company. The town was given a Maori name in 1844 meaning ‘Big Harbour’ from nui ‘big’ and wanga ‘harbour’, a reference to the mouth of the River Whanganui ‘Big River Mouth’ on which it lies.

Wanganui

Wanganui , city (1996 pop. 41,097), SW North Island, New Zealand, near the mouth of the Whanganui (or Wanganui) River. Wanganui is a distribution center and port for coastal trade. It was founded in 1840.
