Turin
Turin , Ital. Torino, city (1991 pop. 962,507), capital of Piedmont and of Turin prov., NW Italy, at the confluence of the Po and Dora Riparia rivers. It is a major transportation hub and Italy's most important industrial center. Manufactures include motor vehicles, tires, textiles, clothing, machinery, electronic equipment, leather goods, furniture, chemicals, and vermouth. It is an international fashion center.

Turin
Turin, Canada, Italy, USA Italy (Piedmont): Italian Torino. Named after the Taurini, a Ligurian tribe which might have taken its name from an ancient root word tauro ‘mountains’. Thus Taurini would mean ‘People of the Mountains’. The city is located just to the east of the Alps. It was originally called Taurisia and when it became a Roman military colony Julia Taurinorum after Julius Caesar†; it was renamed Augusta Taurinorum after Caesar Augustus† after he had rebuilt it. It became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1720 and was capital of Italy in 1861–4.

Turin
Turin (Torino) City on the River Po, nw Italy, the country's fourth-largest city and capital of Piedmont (Piemonte) region. A Roman town under Augustus, Turin was a Lombard Duchy between 590 and 636. From 1720 to 1861, it was capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and a centre of the Risorgimento. Damaged during World War 2, Turin remains an important industrial centre. In 1997, its Romanesque cathedral was badly damaged in a fire, but the Turin shroud was saved. Industries: electronic equipment, chemicals, machinery, rubber, paper, leather goods, pharmaceuticals, wines. Pop. (2000) 900,987.
