Tito Schipa

Tito Schipa , 1888–1965, Italian operatic tenor. He made his debut in 1910 in Vercelli. After many appearances in Europe, he came to the United States in 1919, joining the Chicago Opera Company. He sang with the Metropolitan Opera Company from 1932 to 1935. Possessing a beautiful voice and impeccable artistry, he sang the leading lyric tenor roles in all the principal operas of the French and German repertory and appeared in the major opera houses of Spain, Italy, and South America.

Schipa, Tito (Raffaele Attilio Amadeo) (b Lecce, 1888; d Wickersham, NY, 1965). It. tenor. Opera début Vercelli, 1910 (Alfredo in La traviata). Rome 1914; La Scala 1915. Created Ruggero in La rondine, Monte Carlo 1917. Member, Chicago Opera 1919–32. NY début 1920. NY Met 1932–5 and 1940–1. Sang in It. until 1952. Last stage appearances Buenos Aires and Lecce 1954. Concert tour of Russia 1957. Taught in Rome and wrote operetta (1929).
