Thomas Campbell

Thomas Campbell 1777-1844, Scottish poet. He is best known for his war poems "Hohenlinden," "The Battle of the Baltic," and "Ye Mariners of England." Among his other volumes of poetry are The Pleasure of Hope (1799), Gertrude of Wyoming (1809); and Theodric (1824).

Campbell, Thomas (1777–1844), was closely associated with the founding of the University of London in the late 1820s. He published The Pleasures of Hope (1799), Gertrude of Wyoming (1809), Theodric, and Other Poems (1824) and The Pilgrim of Glencoe, and Other Poems (1842). He is now chiefly remembered for his war-songs, ‘The Battle of Hohenlinden’, ‘The Battle of the Baltic’, and ‘Ye Mariners of England’; and his ballads, such as ‘The Soldier's Dream’ and ‘Lord Ullin's Daughter’.
