Alban
Alban ♂ From the Latin name Albanus, which is of uncertain origin. It may be an ethnic name from one of the numerous places in the Roman Empire called Alba ‘white’, or it may represent a Latinized form of a British name derived from the Celtic word alp ‘rock, crag’. Christian tradition has it that St Alban was the first martyr in Roman Britain, who was executed, probably in 209, at Verulamium (now known as St Albans). A Benedictine abbey was founded there and dedicated to the saint by King Offa. Derivation from Albion, a poetic name for Britain, is also a possibility.
Pet forms: Albie, Alby. |

Alban, St
Alban, St. Protomartyr of Britain, known from early medieval hagiographies. These portray him as a Roman officer who sheltered a priest during one of the persecutions and was martyred at Verulamium. No date is given but dates in the early and the late 3rd cent. have been put forward. The description of the trial and passion of Alban reflects the actual topography of Verulamium and the medieval St Albans abbey may perpetuate the site of his death or burial; the shrine was in existence to be visited by Bishop Germanus of Auxerre in 429.

Alban, St
Alban, St. The first British martyr. A pagan of Verulamium (now St Albans), he was converted and baptized by a fugitive priest whom he sheltered. When the Emperor sent soldiers to search the house, Alban disguised himself in the priest's cloak, was arrested, and condemned to death. His martyrdom almost certainly took place under Septimius Severus (c.209), not under Diocletian. Feast day, 22 June (dropped from the RC calendar in 1969; now observed locally on 20 June); 17 June in the BCP.
