Rajasthan
Rajasthan , state (2001 provisional pop. 56,473,122), 132,150 sq mi (342,269 sq km), NW India, bordered on the west by Pakistan. The capital is Jaipur ; other large cities are Ajmer , Jodhpur , Bikaner , Kota , and Udaipur . In the west of the state is the Thar (Indian) Desert, which is sparsely inhabited by pastoral nomads. In the east is part of the upland region of the Deccan, where, with the aid of irrigation, millet, wheat, and cotton are grown. The state's cultivated acreage has increased through irrigation projects, including the Indira Gandhi Canal, opened in 1984. The Aravalli Hills cross the state from the northeast to the southwest; they produces salt, lead, zinc, marble, coal, mica, phosphate, and gypsum. Handicrafts are Rajasthan's leading industry. Hindus comprise about 75% of the population, which also includes Muslims, Jains, and native peoples. Rajasthani and Hindi are the principal languages.

Rajasthan
Rajasthan State in nw India, on the border with Pakistan; the capital is Jaipur. Other major cities include Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer. Rajasthan was the homeland of the Rajputs. The state formed in 1950, and enlarged in 1966. Pastoral nomads inhabit the Thar Desert in the w. The e is part of the Deccan plateau, where wheat, millet, and cotton grow with the aid of irrigation. There are coal, marble, mica, and gypsum mines. Industries: handicrafts, cotton milling. Area: 342,266sq km (132,149sq mi). Pop. (2001) 56,473,122.

Rājasthān
Rājasthān, India Rājpūtanā A state, formerly comprising eighteen princely states and other small pockets of territory, with a name meaning ‘Land of the Kings’ from the Sanskrit rāja ‘king’ and sthana, itself from stan. Its previous name meant ‘Country of the Rājpūts’, ‘sons of rājas’ from putra ‘son’. The Rājpūts are descended from the Hindu Kshattriya warrior caste.
