Port Moresby
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea The bay was explored in 1873 by Captain (later Admiral) John Moresby (1830–1922), a British naval commander and explorer who named the natural harbour after his father, Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby (1786–1877). It was annexed by the UK in 1883 and became the capital of the Australian‐administered UN Trust Territory of New Guinea in 1945. It became the capital of Papua New Guinea on independence in 1975.

Port Moresby
Port Moresby , town (1990 pop. 193,242), capital of Papua New Guinea, on New Guinea island and on the Gulf of Papua. Rubber, gold, and copra are exported. Port Moresby was founded by Capt. John Moresby, who landed there in 1873. The British occupied it in 1883. During World War II the chief Allied base on New Guinea was there. A new capital is being built in suburban Waigani. |

Port Moresby
Port Moresby Capital of Papua New Guinea, on the se coast of New Guinea. Settled by the British in the 1880s, its sheltered harbour was the site of an important Allied base in World War II. It developed rapidly in the post-war period. Exports: gold, copper, rubber. Pop. (2000) 252,000.
