Northern Territory
Northern Territory (Australia) A part of South Australia until 1911, when its population was just over 3,000, it was transferred to the federal government and became the responsibility of the Ministry for External Affairs. A legislative council was established in 1947, which in 1974 became an elected body of nineteen members. Its status was redefined in 1978, when it received internal self-government headed by an administrator and a chief minister, though it remains dependent on the federal government for most of its income. Since 1976, around one-third of its area has been given as reserves to its numerically significant population of Aborigines and Torres Straits Islanders.
