Nicodemus
Nicodemus A Pharisee well-disposed towards Jesus, mentioned only in the gospel of John (7: 50–2). He seems to typify a kind of puzzled half-belief which the evangelist would like to convert by a new birth (3: 4, 9); but Nicodemus is perhaps held back by fear (19: 39). He is aware that a sympathetic approach to Christ will attract Jewish hostility. The evangelist portrays Nicodemus as a possible Jewish convert to the Church, with expulsion from the synagogue as the consequence (John 9: 22).
