Matterhorn
Matterhorn (French: Mont Cervin; Italian: Monte Cervino), Italy‐Switzerland, USA Italy‐Switzerland: a mountain straddling the border between the two countries, the name is derived from the German Matte ‘meadow’ and Horn ‘horn’, the first word referring to the meadows at its base and the second to its curved peak. The Italian cervino ‘deer‐like’ conjures up a deer's antlers.

Matterhorn
Matterhorn , Fr. Mont Cervin, Ital. Monte Cervino, peak, c.14,700 ft (4,480 m) high, in the Pennine Alps, on the Swiss-Italian border, near Zermatt. Its distinctive pyramidal peak was formed by the enlargement of several cirques. It was first scaled in 1865 by Edward Whymper, the English mountaineer. The nearby Matterjoch or Théodule , a pass (alt. 10,800 ft/3,292 m), links Italy with Switzerland. |

Matterhorn
Matterhorn (Monte Cervino) Mountain peak in Switzerland, in the Pennine Alps, on the Swiss-Italian border. It has a distinctive pyramidal peak formed from several cirques and was first climbed by English mountaineer Edward Whymper in 1865. Height: 4478m (14,691ft).

Matterhorn
Matterhorn a mountain in the Alps, on the border between Switzerland and Italy, first climbed in 1865 by the English mountaineer Edward Whymper. It may be taken as the type of a difficult and dangerous ascent.
