Kanpur

Kanpur , city (1991 pop. 2,029,889), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Ganges River. A major industrial center, it produces chemicals, textiles, leather goods, and food products. It is also a transportation hub with an airport. There are educational institutions in engineering and agriculture, an experimental farm, and a technology institute. Kanpur was a village until its cession to the British in 1801 by the Nawab of Oudh. During the Indian Mutiny (1857), Nana Sahib, whose pension claim had been rejected, slaughtered the entire British garrison, including women and children.

Kānpur

Kānpur, Uttar Pradesh/India Kanhaiyapur, Cawnpore Several legends suggest the town is connected with Krishna, thus the ‘Town of Krishna’ or ‘Town of Kānh’with the additional pur. According to one, Rja Hindu Singh founded the town on the day that Krishna’s birth is celebrated in about 1750. It was thus called Kanhaipur, Kanhaiya being one of Krishna’s names. This was eventually shortened to Kānpur.

Kanpur

Kanpur (Cawnpore) City on the River Ganges, Uttar Pradesh, n India. Kanpur was ceded to the British in 1801, and became a frontier post. During the Indian Mutiny, the entire British garrison in Kanpur was massacred. The city is now a major industrial and commercial centre. Industries: chemicals, leather goods, textiles. Pop.
