Hillel fl. c.30 BC-AD 10, Jewish scholar, regarded as the forebear of the later patriarchs who led the Jews of Palestine until c.AD 400. The Jerusalem Talmud calls him the president of the Sanhedrin. He and Shammai formed the most important of the rabbinic zuggot (oppositional pairs), with Hillel usually taking a more liberal stance in the interpretation of scripture. He was the great spiritual and ethical leader of his generation. His most famous maxim is "Do not unto others that which is hateful unto thee."

Hillel (late 1st cent. BCE–early 1st cent. CE). Leading Jewish ḥakham (sage) of the second Temple period. He rapidly emerged as a prominent interpreter of Torah, developing his seven rules of hermeneutics. He became nasi (president) of the Sanhedrin, and, with Shammai, formed the last of the pairs (zugot) of scholars. In general, Hillel adopted the less rigorous interpretations of Torah, though B.Shab. 77a refers to six issues where Hillel was more rigorous.
