Hebe

Hebe ♀ Pronounced ‘hee-bee’: from a Greek name, a feminine form of the adjective hēbos ‘young’. This was borne in Greek mythology by a minor goddess who was a personification of youth. She was a daughter of Zeus and the wife of Hephaistos; it was her duty to act as cup-bearer to the gods. The name was taken up in England in the late 19th century, but it has fallen out of fashion again.

Hebe (family Scrophulariaceae) A genus of shrubs, very closely related to Veronica but, unlike that genus, truly shrubby and with the capsule dorsally (not laterally) compressed. They are much cultivated for the flowers and foliage. There are about 75 species in the extreme south of S. America, New Zealand, and Australia.

Hebe Asteroid 6, discovered in 1847 by the German amateur astronomer Karl Ludwig Hencke (1793–1866). Hebe is an S-class asteroid of diameter 204 km. Its orbit has a semimajor axis of 2.425 AU, period 3.78 years, perihelion 1.94 AU, aphelion 2.91 AU, and inclination 14°.8.

Hebe , in Greek religion and mythology, goddess of youth; daughter of Zeus and Hera and wife of Hercules. She appears only occasionally in legend as a cupbearer and attendant of the gods. The Romans identified her as Juventas.
