Haifa
Haifa (Hebrew: H̱efa), Israel Sykaminos, Caiffa/Caiphas Given its position on the wooded slopes of Mt Carmel, the name is probably derived from the Hebrew kef ‘rock’ or ‘crag’. However, it has been suggested that it might come from the Hebrew hof yafe ‘beautiful coast’ as it overlooks the sea. In 1099, during the First Crusade, the town was captured by the Crusaders who called it Caiffa or Caiphas, possibly after Caiaphus (also spelt Caiphas), who was supposedly born in the city and became high priest of the Jews during the time of Jesus.
