George Leonard Carey

George Leonard Carey 1935-, archbishop of Canterbury (1991-2002). From a working-class background, he graduated from the London School of Divinity in 1962 and was ordained the same year. Carey was appointed bishop of Bath and Wells in 1987 and was enthroned as the 103d archbishop of Canterbury in 1991, succeeding Robert Runcie . Opposed to "extreme" liberalism in the Church of England , he has strong ties to the church's Anglo-Catholic and evangelical wings and championed the ordination of women. Carey became known as the "green bishop" for his environmental activism while bishop of Bath and Wells. He retired in 2002 and was succeeded by Rowan Williams .

Carey, George Leonard (1935– ) Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of all England (1991–2002). After serving for four years as curate of St Mary's Church, Islington, he became bishop of Bath and Wells (1988). Carey was on the evangelical wing of the Church of England. He favoured the ordination of women priests and supported environmental conservation. His books include I Believe in Men (1975) and The Great God Robbery (1989). See also evangelicalism

Carey, George (b. 1935). Archbishop of Canterbury. Born and educated in Essex, after national service in the RAF, Carey graduated from the London College of Divinity and King's College, London. He was successively curate in Islington, theological college lecturer, vicar of St Nicholas's, Durham (1975), principal of Trinity College, Bristol (1982), bishop of Bath and Wells (1987), and archbishop (1991). Originally an evangelical, he nurtures tolerance within Anglicanism and progress towards unity with Rome and eastern orthodoxy.
