Gad

Gad

Gad A son of Jacob, regarded as the ancestor of the tribe of Gad, which settled to the east of Jordan (Num. 32: 20–32). They had enjoyed a reputation as soldiers (1 Chr. 12: 8, 14), but did not escape the assyrian captivity in 734 BCE, when the tribe disappears from history (1 Chron. 5: 26). In some translations of Isa. 65: 11 (e.g. NRSV) ‘Gad’ is regarded as a god of fortune.
