Scharwenka, (Franz) Xaver

Scharwenka, (Franz) Xaver (b Samter, Posen, 1850; d Berlin, 1924). Ger. pianist, conductor, and composer. Taught at Kullak Acad., Berlin, 1868–73. Début Berlin 1869. European tours from 1874. Visited London on occasions between 1879 and 1899. Founded cons. in Berlin 1881 (merged with Klindworth Cons. 1893). Lived in USA 1891–8, founding cons. in NY. Returned to Ger. and was co-dir. Klindworth-Scharwenka Cons. 1898–1914. Opened new sch. in Berlin 1914. Comps. incl. opera, sym., 4 pf. concs., 2 pf. sonatas, church mus., chamber mus., and many songs. Ed. Schumann's pf. works.

Franz Xaver Scharwenka

Franz Xaver Scharwenka , 1850–1924, Polish-German pianist and composer. He founded his own conservatories in Berlin (1881) and New York City (1891). Beginning in 1874 he toured in Europe and the United States. Of his compositions, only a few piano pieces are still popular. His brother Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka, 1847–1917, was associated with him in teaching and composed several orchestral works, chamber music, and choral music.
