Magendie, François (1783–1855) French physician; published the first modern physiology textbook Précis Élémentaire de Physiologie (1817), in which he demonstrated the importance of nitrogenous foods (protein) in the diet; in 1829 he stated that ‘all parts of the body of man undergo an intimate motion which serves to both expel those molecules that can or should no longer make up the body and replace them with new ones’—a concept rediscovered in 1942 by Schoenheimer as dynamic equilibrium.
