Dutch East Indies Until 1949, the part of Southeast Asia that is now Indonesia. An overseas territory of the Netherlands, it comprised the Malay Archipelago, Sumatra, Java, Borneo (except North Borneo), Sulawesi, Moluccas, and the Lesser Sunda Islands (except Portuguese Timor). The Dutch colonized the islands in the early 17th century.
