earthquake magnitude
earthquake magnitude (earthquake intensity) The magnitude of an earthquake can be estimated from its destructiveness using the Mercalli scale. As this measure is also dependent on the local geologic and building context, it has been largely replaced by the Richter scale, based on the amplitude of seismic waves.
