Cardinal directions

Cardinal directions. The division of space, in Hindu cosmology, into the 4 directions, NSEW, of great importance in sacrifice, orientation of towns and buildings, etc. With the triloka (see LOKA), they make up ‘all this’, i.e. the totality of space.

cardinal points, the four points of north, south, east, and west on a magnetic compass card. The points midway between these—north-east, south-east, south-west, and north-west—are known as the inter-cardinal points.
