David Franklin Houston

David Franklin Houston , 1866-1940, American cabinet officer and educator, b. Monroe, N.C., grad. South Carolina College, 1887, M.A. Harvard, 1892. He taught political science at the Univ. of Texas (1894-1902) and was later president of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (1902-5), president of the Univ. of Texas (1905-8), and chancellor of Washington Univ. in St. Louis (1908-16). He served in Woodrow Wilson's cabinet first as Secretary of Agriculture (1913-20), then as Secretary of the Treasury (1920-21). He later entered business in New York City.

Camp David the country retreat of the President of the US, in the Appalachian Mountains in Maryland. President Carter hosted talks there between the leaders of Israel and Egypt which resulted in the Camp David agreements (1978) and the Egypt–Israel peace treaty of 1979.

Originally established and named Shangri-La in 1942 by President Franklin Roosevelt, Camp David was renamed in 1953 by President Dwight Eisenhower after his grandson David.
