Cornelius (d. 253), Bp. of Rome from 251. Elected after the Papacy had been vacant for 14 months, he was faced with opposition from the Novatianist schismatics, who objected to his relatively lenient policy towards those who had lapsed during the persecutions. He died in exile, traditionally a martyr. Feast day, 16 Sept.
