Cornelius, Peter (real name, Lauritz PeterCorneliys Petersen)

Cornelius, Peter (real name, Lauritz PeterCorneliys Petersen) , esteemed Danish tenor; b. Labjerggaard, Jan. 4, 1865; d. Snekkersten, near Copenhagen, Dec. 30, 1934. He studied with Nyrop in Copenhagen, making his operatic debut there in the baritone role of Escamillo (1892). After further appearances as a baritone, he then studied with Lieban, Revilliers, and Spiro in Berlin and made his tenor debut as the Steersman in Der fliegende Hollander in Copenhagen (1899), where he was subsequently a principal member of the Royal Danish Theater until 1922. He also sang at the Bayreuth Festival in 1906 and at London’s Covent Garden (1907–14), and made guest appearances in Paris, Stockholm, and Oslo. Although he returned briefly to the stage in 1927, his later years were devoted mainly to teaching. He was particularly known for his Wagnerian roles, which included Tannhauser, Siegfried, Lohengrin, Siegmund, and Tristan.
