Confederate States of America (Confederacy) Southern states that seceded from the Union following the election of Abraham Lincoln. South Carolina left in December 1860, and was followed closely by Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. In March 1861, Jefferson Davis was elected president and a new constitution protected states' rights and retained slavery. A capital was established at Montgomery, Alabama. On April 12, the US Civil War began and Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia joined the Confederacy. The capital was moved to Richmond, Virginia. The Confederacy, despite its cotton trade, received little external support and internal division contributed to its defeat and dissolution in April 1965.
