communion of saints
communion of saints The classic belief affirmed in the creeds that faithful Christians who have died still enjoy a relationship with believers on earth; the germ of the idea is in Col. 1: 12, and the puzzling reference in 1 Cor. 15: 29 to the practice of being baptized on behalf of the dead presupposes some sort of continuing relationship. Requests for the prayers of the saints are first met in the 3rd cent. in the Roman catacombs.
