canticle. A song or prayer (normally other than one of the Psalms) derived from the Bible, which is used in the liturgical worship of the Church. In the E. and W. Churches the NT canticles, the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (and in the W. also the Benedictus), are used in the Office every day. The OT canticles prescribed for use in the E. Church are usually omitted; in the W. they vary from day to day. In modern Anglican rites the choice of canticles is more flexible.
