Belial
Belial (or Beliar) In the OT the word in Hebrew denotes worthlessness (hence sons of Belial in AV of 1 Sam. 10: 27; ‘worthless fellows’, NRSV; ‘scoundrels’, REB). In the inter-testamental literature and Dead Sea scrolls, Belial becomes the name of the wicked one, and so in the NT a synonym for Satan (2 Cor. 6: 15).

Belial
Belial the personification of evil, used from early times as a name for the Devil, and by Milton as the name of the fallen angel who represents impurity. Following biblical use, the name is often used in the phrase sons of Belial. It comes from a Hebrew word meaning ‘worthlessness’.

Belial. A Hebrew word probably meaning ‘worthlessness’, ‘wickedness’, or ‘destruction’. It occurs several times in the OT, usually in combination with a noun, e.g. ‘sons of Belial’, only once in the NT.

Belial
Belial has come to mean the spirit of evil personified, and is used from early times as a name for the Devil or one of the fiends, and by Milton (Paradise Lost, I. 490) as the name of one of the fallen angels.
