Asher

Asher

Asher ♂ Jewish: meaning ‘fortunate’ or ‘happy’ in Hebrew. It was borne in the Bible by one of the sons of Jacob: ‘and Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed; and she called his name Asher’ (Genesis 30:13). Outside the Jewish community, it is probably a transferred use of the surname, derived from a local name for someone who lived by an ash tree, Middle English asche.

Variant: Osher.
