neurotic depression An alternative label for reactive depression, it is commonly contrasted with the more severe psychotic or endogenous depressions, although the distinction is now challenged. Worry, tearfulness, feeling worse in the evening, and difficulty in making decisions are considered typical. The hallucinations, delusions, agitation, retardation, and early wakening considered symptomatic of psychotic depression are not usually present. See also DEPRESSION.
