William Cecil Dampier

c. 1652-1715

English buccaneer and explorer who achieved fame writing about his voyages. He circumnavigated the globe, visiting Africa, the Philippines, and Australia. Returning to England, he published A New Voyage Round the World (1697), a vivid account of his adventures and the places he had visited. In 1699 he commanded a voyage of exploration in the South Seas. He explored Australia and New Guinea, discovering Dampier Archipelago and Strait.
