Louise Schmir Hay

1935-1989

Polish-American mathematician who developed an international reputation for her work in mathematical logic and theoretical computer science. As Chair of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Hay was the first woman to have such a position at a major American research university. Hay was also a founding member of the Association of Women in Mathematics, which after her death established the Louise Hay Award for Contributions of Women in Mathematics in her honor.
