Johan Gunnar Andersson
1874-1960
Swedish geologist, paleontologist, and archaeologist known for his study of prehistoric vertebrate fossils, especially the fossils of Peking man (Sinanthropus pekinensis) in southwest China. He participated in two arctic expeditions: 1898 with Alfred Nathorst and 1901-03 with Swedish explorer and geographer Otto Nordenskjold. He completed his doctorate in geology (1906) and became director of the Swedish Geological Survey. In 1928 he founded the Museum of East Asian Antiquities, a museum built around his personal collections.
