American physician and radiologist whose work in the detection of breast cancer culminated with the development of mammography in 1964. Mammography, a technique that uses periodic x-ray examinations to detect breast cancer, has been a significant development in the early detection of this disease, leading to more effective treatment at a stage when the disease is often more treatable. Although some controversy exists about its use, mammography is generally credited with helping increase the survival rate for women diagnosed early.
