Giovanni Domenico Maraldi
1709-1788
Italian-French astronomer known for his observations and improvements to the theory of Jovian satellite motions. Most of Maraldi's work was in positional astronomy, though he did participate in various geodesic operations, including a partial survey of the French-Atlantic coast (1735), a redetermination of the Paris meridian (1739-40), and Dominique Cassini III's map of France project. Maraldi also made regular meteorological observations and participated in an experiment to determine the velocity of sound (1738).
