Georges-Marie Haardt
1884-1932
French explorer who took part in a series of expeditions in the Sahara Desert during the 1920s and 1930s. Vehicles especially designed by the Citroën company were used to cross the Sahara Desert in North Africa. In 1922 Haardt, Louis Audoin-Dubreuil, and 10 others crossed the Sahara Desert from Touggourt in Algeria to Timbuktu in the Sudan in a record-breaking 20 days. The 1931-32 expedition partially followed Marco Polo's route along the Silk Road from Beirut to Beijing.
