Russian mathematician who solved the Restricted Burnside Problem, one of the most difficult and long-lasting problems in the branch of mathematics called group theory. Author of more than 60 research papers in mathematics, in 1994 Zelmanov was awarded a Fields Medal (the highest honor in mathematics) for his solution to the Restricted Burnside Problem.
