random amplified polymorphic DNA

views updated

random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) A technique in molecular biology for the rapid assignation of DNA-based character states for phylogenetic analysis. The technique uses the polymerase chain reaction to amplify any genomic region containing an arbitrary sequence. The resulting amplified DNA fragment sizes are then used as characters for phylogenetic analysis.
