Phragmites
Phragmites (reed-grasses; family Gramineae) A genus of tall, stout grasses which have robust stems and large plumes of slender spikelets forming a nodding panicle. They are perennial with rhizomes. The ligule is a ring of hairs. All the florets have a tuft of long, silky hairs arising from the base. The lemma is 3-nerved and twice as long as the upper glume and the palea is less than one-third the length of the lemma. There are usually 3 stamens, although often there are fewer in the lower florets. The ovary is glabrous, with a short style. There are 3 species, found throughout the world, usually in swampy or marshy conditions.
