phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) A three-carbon compound that is the substrate for carbon dioxide fixation during photosynthesis in C4 plants (see C4 pathway). PEP is also an intermediate in glycolysis (being the immediate precursor of pyruvate) and the glyoxylate cycle.
