Opisthognathidae (jawfish; subclass Actinopterygii, order Perciformes) A small family of marine fish that have a long, low, dorsal fin and a large mouth which enables them to swallow large prey. They tend to live in burrows in tropical to subtropical waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. One of the larger species, Opisthognathus aurifrons, which grows to 12 cm, is found in the tropical western Atlantic region. There are about 30 species.
