The small ventral fins are situated in front of the much larger pectoral fins. Sandfish have a large mouth, with the lower jaw longer than the upper jaw. Found in very shallow water, Crapatalus arenarius (9 cm) is able to bury itself quickly in the sand. There are about three species, found in the coastal waters of Australia.
