graded reach A length (reach) of a stream channel in which the gradient and cross-sectional form have become adjusted to carry just the discharge and sediment load that are normally supplied from upstream. Such a reach is said to be in equilibrium. Early definitions emphasized the smooth long profile of such a reach; it is now realized that a profile may be irregular and the reach still be graded.
