Dromaiidae(emu; class Aves, order Casuariiformes) A monotypic family (Dromaius novaehollandiae) of large, ratite birds that have grey-brown, hair-like plumage, a stout bill, vestigial wings, and no tail feathers. Emus have long legs with three toes and short claws. They inhabit dry, open country, feeding on vegetable matter and fruit, and nesting in a hollow in the ground. They are confined to Australia; a second species D. diemenianus (dwarf emu) is extinct and sometimes regarded as a subspecies. Emus are closely related to the Casuariidae.
