Chaoboridae (gnats; order Diptera, suborder Nematocera) A small family of gnats in which the adults resemble mosquitoes but have poorly developed mouth-parts. The family includes Chaoborus crystallinus whose carnivorous larvae (ghost, or phantom, larvae) are almost transparent, and have no spiracles, respiring by absorbing air from two conspicuous air sacs, which also adjust the density of the larva so it matches that of the water in which it lives.
