Capitonidae (barbets; class Aves, order Piciformes) A family of small, stout, brightly coloured, large-headed birds that have heavy, sharp bills, feather tufts around the nostrils, and rictal and chin bristles. Their wings and legs are short. They are arboreal, nesting in tree holes or banks, and feeding mainly on fruit, berries, and seeds. There are 12 genera, with over 80 species, found in Central and S. America, Africa, and southern Asia.
