biotelemetry
biotelemetry (radiotelemetry) Remote-sensing method for monitoring animal movements using small transmitters attached externally to the body of the animal or implanted within the body cavity. It enables the precise locations of animals to be followed, and may also monitor changes in heartbeat, e.g. in response to stress. It is especially useful for studying migratory animals in remote areas and is an important aid to the study of bird migrations. See also RADAR TRACKING; RADIO TRACKING.
